The Last of Us: Left Behind Available as a Standalone Download May 12

The Last of Us: Left Behind Available as a Standalone Download May 12

The Last of Us; Left Behind will be available as a standalone game on May 12

The Last of Us: Left Behind Available as a Standalone Download May 12

The team at Naughty Dog is excited to let you know that Left Behind, the critically acclaimed and award-winning single-player chapter to The Last of Us, will be available as a standalone download via the PlayStation Store. The Last of Us: Left Behind standalone will be available on both PS3 and PS4 on May 12 for only $9.99. We will be dropping the price of the Left Behind Add-on on PS3 to the same price on that day as well.

If you haven’t had a chance yet to check out The Last of Us, this is a nicely priced gateway to checking out the world and characters so many people (and critics loved). While part of the story of Left Behind takes place during the main narrative arc of The Last of Us, I think some of the best and most touching moments of any game in recent memory occur during the prequel segments, as we follow Ellie and Riley as they sneak out of boarding school to visit an abandoned mall, getting one final chance to enjoy their friendship before Riley leaves to join the Fireflies.

You can get more immersed into the story of Ellie and Riley in The Last of Us: American Dreams comic book, published by Dark Horse, co-written by Faith Erin Hicks and The Last of Us Creative Director Neil Druckmann, with interior art by Faith Erin Hicks. I highly, highly recommend it.

We realize that most of Naughty Dog fans and readers of the PlayStation.Blog will have probably already played The Last of Us and maybe even the Left Behind Add-on chapter — if you enjoyed the games, be sure to tell your friends that haven’t played of this great introduction to The Last of Us. We’ve also included a two hour trial of the Factions Multiplayer mode. The Left Behind standalone game will have built-in upgrade paths through the in-game store to both the full Factions experience and/or the full game for The Last of Us.

Below are the details on the upgrade possibilities on both PS3 and PS4 after you already own the Left Behind standalone game.

PS4

Full Factions Multiplayer

$9.99

Full digital single-player game with Treacherous Territories Map Pack

(if you already own the full Factions Multiplayer)

$29.99

Full digital single-player game, Factions Multiplayer Mode, and the Treacherous Territories Map Pack bundle

$39.99

PS3

Full Factions Multiplayer

$9.99

Full digital single-player game with Treacherous Territories Map Pack

(if you already own the full Factions Multiplayer)

$19.99

Full digital single-player game, Factions Multiplayer Mode, and the Treacherous Territories Map Pack bundle

$29.99

We hope to see all you new fans of The Last of Us on May 12!

Operation Supply Drop’s 8-Bit Salute Year Two

UPDATE: TOP THREE DONORS

It was an incredible weekend and thank you to everyone who watched our Twitch stream. Most importantly, a huge thank you to everyone who donated to our 8-bit Salute with Operation Supply Drop. We raised nearly $12,500. That’s a testament to how awesome our community is. Two donors contributed over $1,000 apiece. Tremendously cool of Dominic Jay DeStefano and John Knowles to do this. Dominic was our top donor and John donated the second most. Jesus Patino also pitched in 1K. Prizing was only available to our top three U.S. residents and Heather Currie-Martinez came in third. A hearty thank you to our top donors and everyone who contributed! The prizing is over but you can still donate to this worthy cause. Top donors will contacted today, May 18, via email.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

We're going to host a livestream for Operation Supply Drop's 8-Bit Salute again this year.  It's not our anniversary or anything like that. Why are we doing it again? Well...

Subject: Uncharted and how it helped me in Iraq

To the wonderful people who made the Uncharted games,

My name is Jeff Bullock.  I am a veteran of the war in Iraq and I just wanted to take a few minutes to let you know what your games have meant to me over the years.  The newest Uncharted game is on its way, so I started replaying 1-3 today.  This inspired me to write this email.

I was in Iraq from December of 2010 to October of 2011 at FOB Warrior in Kirkuk, Iraq.  I brought my PS3 over there with me and set up a projector so I could play my games in my CHU (compartmentalized housing unit), basically a glorified trailer, on a big screen.

While not conducting missions outside the base, I spent most of my time in my CHU trying to relax and forget for a moment that I was in Iraq.  We constantly had indirect fire, specifically rockets, lobbed our way.  It was a multiple times a day sort of thing.  To this day, I still have problems when I hear sounds similar to the incoming alarm or to the sound the rockets themselves made.  It was usually the first thing we talked about in the mornings.  "Hey, did you hear those rockets last night?  Sounded like it landed pretty close."  That sort of thing.

So, there are two things I would like to let you know your games did for me.  The first is the most obvious.  They allowed me an escape into another world, even if that world also had explosions, they were not real and also controllable.  Nothing at all like getting caught out in the open when the incoming alarm went off and just laying down to take cover and hoping that today wasn't your day to die.  It was an escape, one I desperately needed every day.

The second benefit to your games is a little less straight forward.  There were many of those morning conversations about rockets the previous night that I was happy to have nothing to contribute.  I would play Uncharted on my big projector screen and turn the volume up.  As it happens, many times this blocked out the sound of real rockets.  So instead of hearing the alarm or the explosions, I would continue playing, blissfully unaware of the potential dangers around me.  I should mention that even if I had heard the alarm or explosions, there really isn't anything that I could do but sit and wait and hope.  Much better to be happy and distracted.

Your games helped to eliminate some measure of the stress of everyday life in a war zone. I just felt this was something I should share, and I hope that it brings all of you some measure of happiness to know what your games meant to me, and I'm sure to many others in similar situations.

Thank you, and I wish you and your families the best life can offer.  Keep doing what you're doing, you never know how much it can mean to someone.

With great sincerity,

Jeff Bullock

A Grateful Veteran

2015 Naughty Dog GDC Talks and Art Bootcamp

2015 Naughty Dog GDC Talks and Art Bootcamp

Learn about our best practices, techniques, tips, and tricks in tech, art, and animation by joining us for some informative GDC talks and bootcamps this year.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Friday February 27 2015

2015 Naughty Dog GDC Talks and Art Bootcamp

Mark your calendar for March! We’re back at GDC again this year with some great talks from various Dogs. We’re participating in daylong bootcamps for animators and artists this year in addition to having two talks in the more traditional tracks. If you’ve ever wanted to learn our techniques and best practices in tech, art, and animation this is a good year to attend GDC.

Here’s the full rundown of sessions and talks from our team in 2015. Please visit the GDC Schedule Builder if you’d like to add these to your calendar. Hope to see you there!

Bootcamp Organizer: Andrew Maximov, Environmental Artist (Naughty Dog)

Speaker: Robh Ruppel, Art Director (Naughty Dog)

Location: Room 303, South Hall

Date:  Monday, March 2nd

Time:  11:45am - 12:15pm

This talk will cover how cinematography and concept art have evolved together over the years. Examples will be shown tracking art and photography styles from the 30's and 40's thru today's current state of the industry - a comprehensive look at how art informs photography and vice versa. Also discussed is how changes in film equipment and lighting have drastically changed to look of concept art. The principles of good composition still apply to both but film style and art style have piggy backed on top of each other producing a type of image that wasn't in the vernacular 20 years ago.

Speakers: Brianna Wu (Giant Spacekat), Mariel Cartwright (Lab Zero Games), Jonathan Cooper (Naughty Dog), Tim Borrelli (5th Cell)

Location: Room 132, North Hall

Date:  Monday, March 2nd

Time:  1:45pm - 2:45pm

Diversity in game characters has been a controversial subject, especially over the past year. From claims that "women are too hard to animate" to supposed limitations in tech and resources, the fact is that there are many genders, races and orientations that are sorely under-represented in games. This panel will use its expertise in game planning & tech (Brianna Wu), large-scale animation direction (Jonathan Cooper) and independent, diverse animation creation (Mariel Cartwright) to discuss how game teams can plan for diverse characters and performances from an animation standpoint. It's time we stop relying on the age-old excuses.

Speaker: Damon Shelton - Motion Capture Pipeline Technical Director, Naughty Dog

Location:  Room 305, South Hall

Date:  Wednesday, March 4

Time:  12:00pm - 12:30pm

"Capturing The Last of Us" is a technical look into the design and development process for the motion capture pipeline developed for The Last of Us. In this lecture, you will learn about the needs, requirements and thought processes used to design the pipeline. You will also learn about the tools developed to create high-quality motion capture data, manage the large amount of data required to fill the needs of such a large project, and how to deliver this data to the animators. There will be a more in-depth look into the tools developed to clean up the raw data, turn this data into animation curves and the tools created to re-target the animation data onto the character skeletons.

Christian Gyrling - Lead Programmer, Naughty Dog

Location:  Room 306, South Hall

Date:  Wednesday, March 4

Time:  5:00pm - 6:00pm

This talk is a detailed walkthrough of the game engine modifications needed to make The Last of Us Remastered run at 60 fps on PlayStation 4. Topics covered will include the fiber-based job system Naughty Dog adopted for the game, the overall frame-centric engine design, the memory allocation patterns used in the title, and our strategies for dealing with locks.

Happy Naughty Dog Valentine’s Day 2015

Over the past two years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day with some pretty memorable sweetness from a few of our characters. This year we’re marking not only Valentine’s Day but the one year anniversary of The Last of Us: Left Behind. To commend the occasion please enjoy these two adorable Ellie and Riley designs you can share with your special someone.

If you’re in a feistier mood Angel Knives and Black Fang from Raja’s Arcade are available to help you work out all your emotions.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be very loving if didn’t include our latest characters. Check out some incredible Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End card designs featuring Drake, Sam, and Nadine.

Last but not least, we wanted to make our valentines a bit more interactive this year. You can now predict your Valentine’s Day fate by asking Skeleseer in this awesome papercraft:

We recommend you print out all these lovely designs on card stock for more durable and longer lasting adoration. Just click on the links embedded in this blog to get print or email ready versions of the various valentines or download them all here. Once printed please share them online and, while you’re spreading the love, thank Alexandria and Lily for their wonderful creations.

We’re not just rolling out valentines this week. Now available on the Naughty Dog Shop is our brand new, super creepy-cute Clicker pinny! Yes, we’re continuing the ongoing series with Penny Arcade Pinny. You’ll hear more about this series later this year. For now you can buy a Clicker Pinny and pin your favorite person on the heart! (Just please be careful…)

Happy Holidays from Naughty Dog: 30th Anniversary Video

Happy Holidays from Naughty Dog: 30th Anniversary Video

Check out our 2014 holiday card and watch the full length 30th anniversary video now.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Tuesday December 23 2014

Happy Holidays from Naughty Dog: 30th Anniversary Video

Happy holidays everyone! 2014 was a big year for us. We turned thirty years old, launched The Last of Us Remastered to widespread acclaim, opened a shop, had a couple art shows, and revealed gameplay from our next project, just to name some highlights. To celebrate the season here’s our studio holiday card for this year:

Pretty fantastic, huh? This sweater, designed by our very own Alexandria Neonakis, will be available in physical form at some point in the near future. It might be perfect for a Christmas in July situation or perhaps a holiday 2015 addition to our ND Shop. Let us know if you’d buy one in the comments and we’ll see when we can make it appear on the shop.

December has been a joyous month for us as we revealed fifteen minutes of gameplay from our next project, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and talked about re-designing Nathan Drake for the PS4 at the first ever PlayStation Experience. This reveal was truly the icing on our thirty year cake.

As a special holiday treat we’re making our full length 30th anniversary video, which we screened for the first time at the PlayStation Experience, available for free. Watch it now:

While we had many cool things happen when we turned thirty we have much more to share with you. First off, we’ll be rolling out a timeline of our history in the coming months. Additionally we have some cool surprises with Penny Arcade coming that will expand our Pinny collection with them. Obviously, we’ll be talking more about Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End over the next year as well. Thirty was pretty great but thirty-one is going to be even better. Get ready for an incredible 2015!

The Last of Us: Deadly New Multiplayer Add-Ons

The Last of Us: Deadly New Multiplayer Add-Ons

The Last of Us Factions Multiplayer gets new weapons, gestures, survival skills, head items, and special executions.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Tuesday December 09 2014

The Last of Us: Deadly New Multiplayer Add-Ons

If you were fortunate enough to attend the PlayStation Experience this past weekend you may have played The Last of Us Remastered with some of our brand new Factions mode add-ons. Or maybe you attended the panel with our multiplayer team and learned about how this was developed. If you participated in our tournament in Vegas you might be downloading this new content for free today.

For those of you who didn’t make it out to the PlayStation Experience there’s a lot of fun coming your way. Here’s a look:

Clearly our The Last of Us combat designer has a soft spot for a good takedown and has designed some very visceral, very lethal Special Executions across nine different weapon categories. These sets of animations are available for purchase for $0.99 each. We had to exclude some sets from the PS3 version of the game due to memory constraints on the hardware. Yes, it seems with our latest add-ons we’re squeezing every last ounce of memory the PS3 has to run our Factions mode.

You can purchase our new Tactical Weapons Bundle for $2.99. In the bundle you’ll get the Tactical Shotgun, Burst Pistol, Frontier Rifle, and Crossbow. Yes, a Crossbow. These items are available for $0.99 each if you prefer to pick your arms individually.

If you’re looking to avoid falling victim to some of these new executions and weapons buy the new Risk Management Survival Skills Bundle for $3.99. In the bundle you’re getting Lone Wolf, a skill that grants you temporary survival skills when you are away from your team, Second Chance, a skill that gives you a free health kit when you have none and take more than half damage, Jack of All Trades, a skill that grants you grab-bag level 1 skills at discount, Lucky Break, a skill that allows you to get more ammo and crafting ingredients when you open supply boxes, and Lethal Efficiency, a skill that allows you to perform a faster, low-to-the-ground neck snap when performing a special execution. If you just want one of these skills it’ll cost you $0.99.

Some of you just want to look your best as you’re surviving the post-pandemic life. We have you covered as the Misfit Head Item Bundle will soothe your style itch. Get the Viking Hat, Plague Mask, Smiley Mask, Outlaw Mask, Ski Goggles, Broken Gas Mask, Ballistic Helmet and Urban Camo Helmet in the Misfit Head Item Bundle for $6.99. Aside from the bundle exclusive Plague mask, you can buy these items individually for various prices.

Rounding out the content drop are our two new Gestures bundles. You’ll get Dust Myself Off, Evil Laugh, Game Over, and Intimidation in Gestures Pack 2. Gestures Pack 3 features You’re Done, Combat Formation, Stretch, and I’m Watching You. Both packs are available for $2.49 or you can buy individual gestures for $0.99.

All this fantastic content will be available when the PlayStation Store updates in your region. Fire up The Last of Us or The Last of Us Remastered and have some post-pandemic, holiday fun this December.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End First Gameplay

Watch the very first gameplay for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Saturday December 06 2014

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End First Gameplay

Saturday morning at the inaugural PlayStation Experience we unveiled the very first Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gameplay. In case you missed it, here’s the full playthrough:

Although we are still in the pre-alpha stage of development, everything you see in the video is in-game and in real-time running at 1080p and a stable 30hz. It’s looking pretty spectacular already and we still have quite some time to optimize and refine our technology to make this the best looking and playing Uncharted game to date.

If you’re wondering who called Nathan Drake “little brother” and exactly what that means, we’ll be trickling out more details soon. Why is Drake on an island? What’s he searching for? Who’s shooting at Drake again and why is he shooting back? Be sure to pay attention to our Twitter feed and social channels for the latest news and updates. 2015 is going to be awesome.

The Naughty Dog Shop: 30th Anniversary Precursor Orb

The Naughty Dog Shop: 30th Anniversary Precursor Orb

Celebrate our 30th anniversary with this limited edition symbol of our studio - the 30th Anniversary Precursor Orb.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Wednesday November 19 2014

The Naughty Dog Shop: 30th Anniversary Precursor Orb

We are officially kicking off a new franchise in our collectible line on the official Naughty Dog Shop this week. We previously revealed our PlayStation Collectibles Clicker Bust and now we’re going back in time a few years with the 30th Anniversary Jak and Daxter Precursor Orb.

This mysterious artifact is an iconic symbol of our studio. The orb has appeared in every one of our games in some manner since its inception. For the physical version, we’ve adorned the Polystone base with our 30th anniversary logo and the orb itself is made of Polystone. The orb stands 10” tall by 5” wide and 6” deep. It’s a proper relic that’s worthy of catching before the limited edition of 1,000 pieces disappears. It is available now for pre-order on the shop for $120. We ship to North America and Canada and are hard at work to start shipping to other regions in the coming months.

We’ll have a special discount on other items in the shop soon so get ready to get some holiday shopping done. Once you get your items share it with the world by using #NDShop. We will be retweeting some of our favorite photos. Be sure to check out the official Naughty Dog Shop often for new products and sales.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Tuesday November 11 2014

The Naughty Dog Shop: Clicker Bust

We recently launched the official Naughty Dog Shop and highlighted two of the cooler items we’ve developed so far. The next product design we’re really proud to show off is the The Last of Us Clicker Bust from PlayStation Collectibles.

She’s a beauty, right? Hand sculpted by Emmy Award nominated Hollywood VFX artist, Vincent Van Dyke, there was a lot of care that went into the design of this collectible. It’s limited to only 1,500 units. The bust is available for pre-sale now on the shop for $150. We currently ship to North America and Canada and are working on other regions.

More products and product highlights will be shown on the Naughty Dog blog and around our various social channels over the next few weeks. Look for new merch and special discounts online soon. The Naughty Dog Shop: Ellie’s Fall Hoodie and Limited Edition Art Book

In case you missed it, we launched the official Naughty Dog Shop last week! We’d been working on some fantastic product designs for launch and we are delighted they are now out there. We wanted to spotlight a couple of the more unique products we have available. First up: Ellie’s Fall Hoodie.

Modeled after Ellie’s in-game hoodie from the Fall section of The Last of Us, this hoodie, as you can see, is really cool looking yet simple. We’ve kept it logo free aside from our custom Naughty Dog tag so if you put this on it looks like you’re wearing a normal, colorful, Neapolitan ice cream themed hoodie. It’s super comfortable and perfect for the colder months ahead. Get some ice cream warmth now.

Also now on the shop is the limited edition The Art of Naughty Dog book:

The book is a treasure trove of art and insights from the thirty year history of the studio. It’s limited to less than one thousand copies on the Naughty Dog Shop so order today. It’s a great gift.

We’ll have more product highlights over the coming weeks. Be sure to check to into the official Naughty Dog Shop often for the latest. Use #NDShop to share your purchases with us!

Naughty Dog 30 Year Anniversary Gallery Show Recap and Future Plans

Naughty Dog 30 Year Anniversary Gallery Show Recap and Future Plans

Our 30th anniversary show opening night from the perspective of a PlayStation MVP and future plans. The show runs until October 12.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Friday October 03 2014

Naughty Dog 30 Year Anniversary Gallery Show Recap and Future Plans

Saturday, September 27 was opening night for our A Tribute to Naughty Dog: 30 Year Anniversary show at Gallery Nucleus. We expected to have a good turnout but the response was truly unbelievable.

That was the line nearly an hour before the show started. Once inside it was even crazier:

We can’t express enough how awesome all our fans are and we thank everyone who visited the gallery or joined the conversation online via #NDMemories or #ND30. We asked one of the opening night attendees, a PlayStation MVP, SanchoWest, to tell us about his experience there. Here’s what he had to say:

Art meets Art. In many ways, this sentence totally nails what Naughty Dog’s 30 Year Anniversary Art Show at Gallery Nucleus is all about. The video games we experience everyday are, in fact, interactive, artistic expressions. The visual concept art from these games hanging next to fan art within an art gallery just made a lot of sense. I wondered - why don’t other developers do this? Naughty Dog is constantly showing us that the root of great games is art.

When I was at the exhibit, it was like seeing old friends again. Remembering the time spent with Nathan Drake, going through the jungles, trekking across the desert and scaling the mountains for lost loot to remembering the pain, anguish and despair I felt with Ellie in The Last of Us. A particular art piece stood out to me called “A Portrait of a Happy-Go-Lucky Girl” and it featured a woman infected by the Cordyceps virus. The artist, Matthew Woodson, captured her last human moments before turning into a “Clicker”. It was haunting and sorrowful. While a very powerful image, I never thought a game could inspire such wonderful art. But, give credit to Naughty Dog for welcoming this medium and championing it.

I assumed that I was going to see impactful pieces and relive gaming memories. One thing I did not expect came from a The Last of Us installation. It was very simple. It was a looping video of various The Last of Us Game environments, similar to a screensaver. This is where I found myself lost; lost in the attention to detail. I was entranced with a post-apocalyptic world filled with empty buildings. Vegetation invaded concrete jungles. Buildings looked worn and tired. It was surreal and very unexpected because these feelings came from taking a brief moment to stop and reflect on images I had seen a million times while playing The Last of Us.

Overall, the event was very inspiring and showed, in the abundance of fans pouring into Gallery Nucleus, and in the elated faces of the Dogs, 30 years well spent. I’m really looking forward to Naughty Dog’s future. Their recent events, like One Night Live and 30 Year Art Gallery, along with the new Naughty Dog Online store, are creating a stronger bond between us fans and the Dogs. Do yourself a favor and visit this exhibit, and experience some lasting, memorable art.”

The show runs until October 12. If you want to buy some amazing fan art act now. Select pieces are still available online. Also, for a limited time, Gallery Nucleus is the only place you can get our The Art of Naughty Dog Limited Edition book as well as other cool Naughty Dog merchandise

On October 4, from 1-5pm PST, Naughty Dog artists will hold a Concept Art Workshop at the gallery for a limited audience. The following weekend, on October 12, a 3D Character Modeling Workshop featuring a character modeling demo from our artists and a 3D Printing Demo by 3D Systems will be happening from 1-5pm PST. These events are first come, first serve, so show up to the gallery early to get a seat.

Hope to see you at the gallery or hear your stories about the show and our anniversary during the next few weeks. Share your thoughts with #NDMemories and/or #ND30. We’ll be re-tweeting and sharing our favorites. Onto the next 30 years!

Naughty Dog 30th Anniversary Art Show and Video

We're celebrating 30 years of making awesome games with a Los Angeles art show, some great workshops, cool merch, and an anniversary video. And much more down the road.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Thursday September 11 2014

Naughty Dog 30th Anniversary Art Show and Video

September marks thirty years of making awesome games at Naughty Dog. From our start as a team of two at JAM Software to the world-renown, two hundred plus devs at the studio you know today, we’ve been hard at work to continually set the standard then surpass it with every subsequent game we create. We’re looking back while looking forward in our upcoming 30th anniversary art show and video.

This is only a tease of the unbelievable stories and rich history told in the full length 30th anniversary video. We’re delighted to announce the first place you'll be able to watch the full length video is during special screenings held on October 4 and 12, 2014 at our Gallery Nucleus art show - A Tribute to Naughty Dog: 30th Anniversary. The complete video will be available online sometime in the next month as well.

The art show itself kicks off September 27. Opening night will be full of fun including a photo booth area, cosplay, a birthday cake, special guests and the opportunity to get some very cool merch such as The Art of Naughty Dog art book. Special workshops in concept and character art featuring artists from our studio will be held October 4 and October 12.

Speaking of artists, not only is the art show the first place anywhere you’ll be able to buy The Art of Naughty Dog in the Limited or Regular Edition, it’s the first place you’ll be able to get 30th anniversary  t-shirts from the fan artists who won our We Love Fine 30th anniversary design contest.

We’re delighted to announce our art show and celebration: A Tribute to Naughty Dog: 30th Anniversary

You’ll want to be among the first to arrive at Gallery Nucleus. Door prizes and giveaways will be given out to a select handful of early attendees including limited quantities of the 30th anniversary t-shirt and posters, which were created by some talented folks here at the studio. The first 30 people in line will be entitled to receive a very limited edition Penny Arcade 30th Anniversary Pinny:

Starting today and until the art show ends (October 12) we’re asking you to tweet out your favorite Naughty Dog memories as a way for celebrating our anniversary online with us. Just use #NDMemories and tell us your favorite moment from a game or a story you’d like to share with us. Post up a photo or screenshot. Make us an anniversary GIF. We’ll retweet the best memories and possibly send you something really cool.

We’ll have an announcement very shortly about a partnership with Treehouse Brand Stores that will make some of these cool items more obtainable for everyone but get out to Los Angeles for our art show if you can. It’s going to be a celebration you won’t want to miss!

Be sure you’re following our social channels for all the latest 30th anniversary news throughout the month of September and beyond.

30th Anniversary Announcements: PAX Prime, Limited Edition Art Book, and Future Plans

30th Anniversary Announcements: PAX Prime, Limited Edition Art Book, and Future Plans

September is the official month of the 30 year anniversary of Naughty Dog. We have some fresh announcements and happenings going down.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Thursday August 28 2014

30th Anniversary Announcements: PAX Prime, Limited Edition Art Book, and Future Plans

If you didn’t catch our post in April, we’re celebrating 30 years of making awesome games this year.  September happens to be the actual month of our anniversary. To kick off festivities a little early we’re heading to PAX Prime this week. First off is a panel from two of our game designers, Doug Holder and Anthony Newman alongside friends at Sucker Punch Productions and Respawn, which explores AAA Combat: Behind the Scenes. Details about the panel, which will be held Saturday, August 30 at 4:30pm PST, can be found on the PAX Prime website.

Our second PAX panel features our Web Designer, Lily Nishita, and covers a topic many of you will find very elucidating. Head to the Game-Changers: Making Mid-Career Transitions & Awesome Games panel happening Sunday, August 31 at 11:30am PST to learn tips about how to break into the game industry!

While at PAX you can score some cool Naughty Dog merchandise when you visit We Love Fine (Booth #7511) and Dark Horse (Booth Sky 10). Dark Horse will be selling The Art of The Last of Us and a limited edition version of The Last of Us: American Dreams graphic novel along with other items. We Love Fine will have booth space dedicated to a selection of their unique The Last of Us apparel including a PAX Prime exclusive t-shirt design. Be sure to drop by to grab these items while they are still in stock.

Also mentioned in April, in partnership with Dark Horse Comics, we’ve compiled an art book to celebrate our history.  We enjoyed it so much we went ahead and created a Limited Edition run of 2,000 copies of the art book.

The Art of Naughty Dog Limited Edition includes a clamshell case with die-cut, red foil paw design, a black, faux leather version of the art book with red cloth bookmark, and two, gate-fold folios featuring four lithographs of our art and two lithographs of fan art. It retails for $99 dollars and pictures don’t do it justice. It’s a beauty. The Limited Edition Art Book will be available exclusively this September during our 30 year anniversary celebration art show at Gallery Nucleus. If you want to be among the first 100 people to own the limited edition art book you’ll have to be there. We’ll have more specifics on the art show in the coming weeks.

If you can’t make it to PAX or the Los Angeles art show and are wondering where you’ll be able to get The Art of Naughty Dog limited edition, or some of the other awesome merch noted here, don’t fret. We have a big, upcoming announcement in conjunction with Treehouse Brand Stores that you won’t want to miss.

Hope to see you in Seattle! Get the latest by following our social channels for 30th anniversary news throughout the month of September.

  • MARKSMAN
  • BARRAGE
  • SALVO
  • SUPPRESSION

The free maps are coming out later this week

PS3 1.08 Patch Notes:

Patch 1.08 File Size: 151MB

NOTE: that all these fixes are already included in The Last of Us: Remastered on PS4.

Weapon Balance

  • Hunting Rifle scope altered to show headshot hit marker.
  • Hunting Rifle scope upgrade level 2 is visually different, like in Single Player.
  • Hunting Rifle now does 70 damage instead of 55.  It's still 2 shots to down but Hunting Rifle players can now finish off wounded enemies more easily.
  • Reduce aim assist of second level zoom on Hunting Rifle and Military Sniper

Bug fixes

  • Fix for buying armor, switching to another loadout while alive, then respawning and losing the armor
  • Fix for buying purchaseable weapon, switching to another loadout which has the same purchaseable weapon, respawning and losing the purchased weapon
  • Fix for being able to spawn on a teammate after switching to a loadout with Strategist 3 before having spawned with that loadout
  • Fix for being able to buy ammo for purchaseable weapon on the waiting-to-respawn screen without the price going up
  • Fix to losing durability on a melee weapon when killing a downed player from more than 1.5 meters away
  • Fix to player going into t-pose when in high cover while holding a shiv
  • Fix for modded 2x4 not downing a player on slopes in certain cases
  • Fix for 2x4 missing player on a slope when doing the horizontal swing animation
  • Fix to not being able to shiv a player from behind on a slope unless you were extremely close
  • Fix to not being able to shiv a stunned player from the front on a slope
    • Note: unfortunately this fix introduced a separate bug where in rare cases of a smoke bomb shiv from the front, the animation of the attacker and victim don't line up properly.  No shiv functionality is affected, this bug is visual only. We are looking into a fix for this.
  • Players using Bomb Expert 3 will no longer be stunned by their own smoke bomb while vaulting or falling
  • Hit sound and enemy flinch reaction for bombs and molotovs now only plays when you actually damage your opponent. The flinch radius was larger than the damage radius on bomb, molotov, and launcher.
  • Fix for late-joiner in a game of Survivors getting additional ingredients and parts at the first supply box in every round
  • Fix for picking up a modded melee weapon and receiving an extra binding / blade / rag
  • Fix for Specter firing sound not playing on University map
  • Fix to Last One Standing not kicking in when players quit a match to leave one player on a team
  • Fix to Last One Standing items not spawning when player had a supply box open at the moment when they became Last One Standing, then picked up the items from that box
  • Fix to Last One Standing items spawning at multiple supply boxes in Survivors under certain rare conditions
  • Fix to 2x4's that weren't picked up sometimes not getting cleaned up when player moves far away from the supply box that spawned it
  • Fix for game ending vox occasionally not playing

Supply Box Balance

  • Supply boxes now adjust for unbalanced teams.  Being on a team of 3 players against a team of 4 players is equivalent to being down by 3 lives in Supply Raid or 2 rounds in Survivors.  There is no reduction in items for players who are on the team with more players.

Team Balance

  • Improved logic for balancing teams between matches
    • Players are rated based on their combined leaderboard KDR values from Supply Raid and Survivors.
    • Teams are balanced such that the sums of each team's player ratings are as close as possible.
    • This also applies to parties, however when parties are involved the assignments of players are more limited so the team balance may not be as close.
    • Note that Interrogation mode also uses the combined KDR values from Supply Raid and Survivors.  In future updates if we have time we'd like to add a unique player rating for each mode.

Free maps! And about those pesky matchmaking times…

Free maps! And about those pesky matchmaking times…

So hey, we're releasing free maps... and we've got some things we want to tell you about regarding the matchmaking issues. But yeah, free maps!

Free maps! And about those pesky matchmaking times…

It's time for a quick status update regarding matchmaking in The Last of Us Remastered. We've been working hard to alleviate the long waits in Factions matchmaking some of our multiplayer community have been experiencing. We are working on resolving this issue for those in our community who are still affected.

We know this can be frustrating and the team here at Naughty Dog wants everyone in our community to know that working on this issue continues to be our number one priority.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have deployed LiveUpdates and Patch 1.02, which have resulted in some significant improvements, but there is still more to be done to reduce the matchmaking wait times.

there is still more to be done to reduce the matchmaking wait times

Over the last two weeks, we've discovered that the most significant improvements may come from working with other teams at PlayStation to make updates to some of the existing matchmaking libraries. Since we are working with multiple groups inside and outside of the studio, we don’t yet have an exact date on when these updates will roll out. Our current estimate is on the short side of weeks, rather than months. We'll be sure to keep you updated the moment we can provide more specific timing, or an actual date.

Believe me, the entire team at Naughty Dog completely understands how frustrating this has been for many of you in our community. We've got some good news. At the end of July, we teased some new multiplayer add-on content which included a glimpse at new maps for Factions. We're glad to say that we've decided to release these two maps for free on both the PS3 and PS4 in appreciation for all of your continued patience as we work to resolve the matchmaking issues.
we've decided to release these two maps for free on both the PS3 and PS4

We will keep you updated as we continue to work on improving the matchmaking wait times and when we can expect the bigger update the roll out. In the meantime, if you find yourself waiting to get into a match, the best thing you can do is exit matchmaking and select "Find Match" again.

Thank you to everyone in our community for your understanding and continued support.

The Last of Us Remastered Patch 1.02

The Last of Us Remastered Patch 1.02

Patch 1.02 for The Last of Us Remastered has been deployed in our continuing effort to reduce the matchmaking delays we've heard about from our multiplayer community.

By arne | Twitter @arnemeyer | Friday August 08 2014

The Last of Us Remastered Patch 1.02

Patch 1.02 will be deployed in North America today. We are working to have the patch deployed in Europe as soon as possible over the weekend, and we expect the patch to be deployed in Asia next week. If you are already logged in, be sure to quit out of the game and check your Downloads notifications that the update file for The Last of Us Remastered has been downloaded and installed.

As many of you may know, especially if you are among the many, many, many people who have been playing our Factions multiplayer mode, that some people have been experiencing long wait times while trying to find a match. We've deployed several LiveUpdates over the past week in an effort to improve the matchmaking wait times. Things have definitely improved but there still remains work for us to get the matchmaking experience where we feel it should be. Patch 1.02 is our latest effort to continuing improving the matchmaking experience.

Once the patch has been deployed, the team here will be keeping a close eye on the time it takes to find a match among our player community so we can continue to address this issue.

One tip: if you've found yourself waiting what you feel is a very long time to get into a match, quit out of matchmaking and go back into "Find a Match". Even though this adds an extra step, we've found that it sometimes helps players get into matches quicker than continuing to wait.

Patch 1.02

File size: 142 MB

Multiplayer

  • Matchmaking updates to improve long wait times some players have experienced to find a match

The Last of Us Remastered Photo Mode

The Last of Us Remastered Photo Mode

Photo Mode is coming for The Last of Us Remastered. What kind of post-pandemic photographer are you?

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Friday July 25 2014

The Last of Us Remastered Photo Mode

We made a slew of cool additions to The Last of Us Remastered to create the definitive The Last of Us game but one of the features we’re most excited about is Photo Mode. After all, what’s a beautiful post pandemic landscape if you can’t share some good pictures of it?

Photo Mode is activated through the pause screen. You can activate it by simply tapping L3 to freeze the action in-game as long you aren’t in a cutscene. For a clear description of how it works, check out a tutorial from Jeff Negus, our in-house editor and videographer:

Camera control, field of view, and depth of field adjustments will help you frame the perfect shot.  Aesthetically, you can add one of ten different color filters and adjust its intensity. You can choose to give your photo a vignette or even select from a selection of eleven different frames. If you like the look of film grain, you can add that as well. There are a ton of options for you to explore.

Photo Mode arrives in Patch 1.01 for The Last of Us Remastered. It will only be available in this PS4 edition of the game. Patch 1.01 will be rolled out globally by the time you get your hands on the game July 29. Let’s see your best photos! Use #TheLastofUs so we can find them and we’ll re-tweet some of our favorites from the official Naughty Dog Twitter.

The Last of Us Remastered Multiplayer: Factions

The Last of Us Remastered Multiplayer: Factions

There are new features, content, and more coming for Factions Multiplayer mode in The Last of Us Remastered

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Tuesday July 22 2014

The Last of Us Remastered Multiplayer: Factions

The Last of Us Remastered launches next week in North America. We’ll be revealing some upcoming DLC and streaming a basic introduction to the multiplayer mode, Factions, live later this week over on our Twitch channel. We plan to show off the new features for PS4 as well as give our primer for those not familiar with the mode on Thursday July 24 at 11:30am PST and 5:30pm PST.

If you can’t watch Twitch stream we asked Erin Daly, Lead Multiplayer Designer, and Quentin Cobb, Game Designer a couple of questions about Factions multiplayer mode in the game. If you’re new to the world of Factions this is a great primer. If you’re a hardened survivor with a clan that never diminishes read on to hear about some exciting developments we were able to make in The Last of Us Remastered.

Q: Why is the multiplayer mode called Factions?

Quentin Cobb: We wanted the online multiplayer to focus on the larger story of the player representing a faction (Fireflies or Hunters) and rebuilding their own clan in that faction. This grounds the online matches in a world where each player is fighting for the survival of their clan and therefore gives each match more weight and importance.

Erin Daly: The name Factions came from what we call the 'metagame'.  Instead of just earning XP and ranking up like most multiplayer games, when you start multiplayer you are put in charge of a small group of survivors trying to stay alive and grow their numbers.  To make progress you must ally yourself with one of the major factions from the single player game - the Hunters, a rag-tag group of brutal killers, or the Fireflies, a more well-equipped resistance group that is still trying to find a cure for the infection.  As you progress events will occur that put your survivors at risk and require you to complete missions during your multiplayer matches to keep them alive.  You must survive for 12 weeks with either the Hunters or Fireflies to beat the metagame.

Q: What was the inspiration for Factions multiplayer?

Quentin Cobb: The inspiration really came from the combat encounters of the single player campaign. We wanted to mirror the slow pace and high lethality of those encounters while keeping a very similar crafting and scavenging system. We did this by making every weapon very lethal, placing crafting items inside of item caches located in strategic parts of the map, having the player appear on the radar while sprinting and keeping ammo very scarce. This would lead to the players sneaking around the map, trying to get to item caches and picking the moment to attack very carefully and making their shots count. We also added a down state which would allow players to revive teammates. All of these factors put an emphasis on stealth and teamwork which many shooters don’t achieve. This created a very unique experience which we feel makes our multiplayer special.

Erin Daly: As Quentin mentioned the inspiration really came from trying to capture the slower pace, stealth, lethality, and consequence of combat in single player, something that is really challenging to do in a live multiplayer environment.  In most multiplayer shooters these days players sprint around at high speeds and spray bullets at anything that moves.  To capture the feeling of combat in single player we had to slow the game down a lot, while still keeping the controls and player movement feeling responsive.  By making the game fairly lethal, but giving players a higher level of awareness of their enemies, we were able to create some very tactical combat, especially when combined with the variety of craftable items like molotovs, nail bombs, and smoke bombs.  In general, players playing overly aggressively will usually find themselves at a disadvantage in The Last of Us.  In the end it's a game where your tactical decision-making matters more than your aiming reflexes.

We also needed to add some of our own unique elements to multiplayer that didn't exist in single player.  For this we build a new loadout system with a variety of survival skills, added some new guns, and added an in-game store where players can use parts they earn in combat to purchase additional ammo, weapon upgrades, and armor.  Combined with the crafting system it offers a lot of on-the-fly tactical choices.  Another big addition was the revive system - when players take enough damage they go into a down state and can crawl around slowly while bleeding out.  With only  4 players on each team it means every life matters and sticking with your team and keeping them alive is a very big part of the game.  It also adds a lot of consequence to death, something we also wanted to capture from single player.  Taking out one enemy is a big deal, as is losing one of your own team.

We've read a lot of feedback from players that they feel the MP game captured the feel of single player very well, which is something we're really happy with.

Q: How big is PS3 multiplayer community and how has it been?

Erin Daly: We have around 9 thousand concurrent players at peak and the community has been very active. The community gives us a lot of feedback on our forums that we use to help balance and tweak Factions.

Q: Any cool or funny community stories from people playing Factions?

Quentin Cobb: I would say the “Batman Shiv” is a cool story. People like to drop down from above an enemy and quickly turn around and shiv an enemy. This has become a very stylish way to shiv someone and I wish we could have gotten in some kind of stat to track when a player successfully pulls off a “Batman Shiv” to award them extra points!

Q: What are the new features for Factions in The Last of Us Remastered?

Erin Daly: Well, first off we are running the game at 1080p and targeting 60 fps. The power of the PS4 and some of our talented engineers were able to significantly improve the load times.

Quentin Cobb: On the gameplay side we made some important tweaks. The DLC map trophies now require five downs or executions and deaths don’t matter. We added eighteen new tips for new players.

If you’re a new player you’ll start with 9 loadout points instead of 8. You’ll reach the max of 13 loadout points sooner as a result. All fifteen of our maps are in each playlist so the player pool will be consolidated. This means faster matchmaking and that you will have a greater variety of maps in each playlist! There’s a lot of great new stuff.

Q: What’s your absolute favorite new feature in Factions in the Remastered edition?

Quentin Cobb: Playing with the higher fps is by far my favorite feature. This improves gameplay dramatically and makes shooting much more precise! I find that gameplay in general is much more responsive and accurate.

Erin Daly: Yeah, agreed. Playing Factions running with higher fps is awesome.  Everything feels much tighter and more precise, especially when it comes to gunplay.  Players are really going to like it.

Q: What are you looking forward to most in the Remastered version?

Quentin Cobb: I’m looking forward to playing Interrogation (my favorite game type) on all the new maps and recording and streaming my matches!

Erin Daly: Yeah, I’m excited to see what our community records and shares. We’ve seen some amazing content and look forward to watching what else get put out there.

Q: I love getting trophies. Will I be able to collect any new trophies in the Remastered edition for Factions?

Quentin Cobb: Remastered will include all DLC trophies along with the original game trophies. No new trophies were added but eight of them were changed to be easier to earn.

Q: Will my The Last of Us Season Pass DLC content carry over?

Erin Daly: Yes, any weapons, survival skills, head items you have purchased on PS3 will carry over. You just need to go into your download list on PS4 and re-download them.

Q: Will we be seeing anymore DLC for Factions?

Erin Daly: Remember those head items some of our more eagle eye forums members caught a glimpse of? We made it work and those will be coming out.

Quentin Cobb: Well…yes, we’re also currently hard at work finishing up some cool new DLC for Factions. We’ll talk about it more in the coming days and after The Last of Us Remastered releases on July 29.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End 2014 E3 Trailer

You’ve been waiting for it and it’s finally here. At E3 2014 we unveiled two trailers, one for each of the PS4 projects we’re currently developing. The UNCHARTED game we’ve been working on sees the return of…well, why don’t you watch the high quality 1080p60 trailer and see for yourself:

(NOTE: A powerful PC and a high speed internet connection is required to stream video at 1080p and 60fps – otherwise you may experience buffering or video playback issues. If you consistently encounter issues, you can view lower quality versions on YouTube.)

All footage you see in the trailer was captured completely in engine. That’s Nathan Drake rendered in 1080p full glory using the power of our PS4 engine. All footage you see in the trailer was captured completely in engine. We’re targeting 60fps for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and as you can see the visual fidelity for our character models will reach new heights. In fact, thanks to the power of the PS4, right now Drake’s Uncharted 4 model is over double the polygons of Joel from The Last of Us PS3.

The next generation of Nathan Drake will explore what it means when Drake is forced back into the world of thieves. He will embark on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. It’s his greatest adventure yet and will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.

You should pre-order now.

All footage you see in the trailer was captured completely in engine. We’ll be providing regular updates on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End from now until release in 2015.

UPDATE #2- 5/28/2014 - Congratulations to Darrn Flynn (highest donor), Sam Hammarberg (2nd place donor), and Tom Jackson (3rd place donor) for contributing the most to our Operation Supply Drop 8-bit Salute. Given the total funds raised from the event itself and those sent via PayPal on our behalf while the site was down we topped over $5,000 for the cause. Thank you to everyone who supported Team Naughty Dog!

UPDATE - 5/19/2014 - So as you might have heard the Operation Supply Drop website went down Saturday about 30 minutes into the event due to a DDoS attack. This coming weekend is a make-up weekend and some of our community members listed in the schedule for May 18 now also will be streaming May 24 and/or 25. We will be awarding prizes for top donations based on the total we have in by May 26 now. If you want to try to win any of the prizes, please visit our team page for the list of current donations. There you can see who has donated the most. (FYI - top donor is currently over $500 as we have some PayPal receipts in from when the OSD site was taken down.)

If you donated more than $250 during the time when the website was down please send your PayPal receipt to this email: ndi-dog@naughtydog.com with the subject line "OSD PayPal Receipt."

If you donated multiple times, please forward each receipt with the correct subject line. The receipts should be time stamped from May 17 noon PST to May 18 noon PST.

Thank you for your understanding and your support!

++++++

Happy Friday! We’re updating Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception™ with patch 1.19 this week. The changes are:

  • Leaderboard reset
  • Block Mesh maps in the custom game list under Team Deathmatch and in The Lab are changed

We know a leaderboard reset can be contentious but we wanted to give everyone a fresh start for our upcoming participation in Operation Supply Drop’s 8-Bit Salute event. To celebrate, all Golden Guns will now be FREE and available to all players. With Patch 1.19 we are winding down patch support for Uncharted 3 but we will continue to provide updates on any sales, community events, and other activities such as the upcoming “In Honor” Uncharted 3 tournament UMG is holding to mark our connection with 8-Bit Salute.

Team Naughty Dog is live streaming our involvement in Operation Supply Drop’s 8-Bit Salute this Saturday. Tune in May 17 from noon PST until midnight PST to our official Twitch channel. If you receive the PlayStation email newsletter you might have heard already that we’re nearing our goal but we can use your help. Please donate to the cause and support the troops!

Come game with us this Saturday! To participate directly, just hop on your PS3 system and make friends with ND8bit. Obviously, we can’t play with everyone but we’ll be online and live streaming our play of every Naughty Dog game available on the PS3 system as well as some of our personal favorite PS3 titles from other studios. To make it even more fun the incredible Brandon Laatsch will be hanging out and hosting the live stream with us.

Multiplayer

 Bug Fixes [discuss]

  • Invisibility & Stuck-on-black-screen bug
    • Players who have become invisible or are stuck on a black screen (typically when waiting to respawn) will be kicked from the match.
    • Players who are kicked will not advance a clan day and suffer any clan losses.
    • Fixed a bug that allowed players to exploit supply boxes for extra ammo and 2x4s.
    • Fixed a bug that allowed player who was the Last One Standing to get additional comeback items from multiple supply boxes.
    • Fixed a bug where the game would sometimes crash when late joining a match.
    • Fixed a bug where players on opposite teams who are spawning at the same time would sometimes spawn near each other.
    • Fixed a bug where players would sometimes get stuck on a black screen when the host quits out during the match intro.
    • Fixed a bug that allowed players to avoid being stunned by a smoke bomb by vaulting over cover.
    • Fixed a rare crash that occurred for the player who stayed in a matchmaking game after all other players had quit.
    • Fixed a bug that prevented the death grunt VOX from playing when dying.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented players from properly shiv killing an enemy who was unlocking the lockbox.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented players using an upgraded 2x4 from downing an enemy who was unlocking the lockbox while repeatedly pressing Triangle
    • Corrected the alignment of many intro animation cameras.
    • Fixed an issue where players were receiving large weapon ammo when downing an enemy with a melee weapon after changing to a pistol-only loadout.
    • Fixed bug where players would sometimes get no ammo from a down/execution when using a pistol-only loadout.
    • Fixed a bug where player would hold their large firearm while doing a melee finisher.
    • Fixed a crash that occurred when the player would sign out while refreshing the in-game store.
    • Fixed an issue where game winning VOX would not play when a game of survivors was won with a shiv kill.
    • Fixed an issue where a player’s modded 2x4 attack animation would be canceled if a player vaulted over an object.
    • Fixed a bug where the shiv cone wasn't aligned properly in certain cases, which made it easier to get a shiv from one side than the other.
    • The Military Sniper has reduced aim assist.

Feature additions and changes

Melee [discuss]

  • Machete now interrupts melee like a gunshot would.  This, combined with the change to a 3-hit swing allows it to beat an upgraded 2x4 in a fight where both players swing at the same time.
  • Machete now has a 3 swing animation and takes 3 hits to down.
  • Upgrading any Melee Weapon now requires 3 items to upgrade (blade, binding and rag).

Weapons [discuss]

  • Burst Rifle now destroys armor in 2 bullets.
  • The first upgrade for the 9mm and Shorty now cost 250 parts.
  • The upgrades for the Hunting Rifle and Burst Rifle now cost 300 for the first level and 600 for the second level
  • The Hunting Rifle scope-in time is slightly faster at the base level. The upgraded levels have not changed.
  • The Hunting Rifle and Military Sniper headshot damage is increased. Now if you get a headshot on an enemy with a helmet, it will only take a body shot to down them.
  • Silenced weapon sounds now falloff at 70 meters.  Silenced weapons can be heard less easily at a distance.

Audio

  • Players wearing certain masks and helmets will now have a muffled filter added to their dialogue.
  • Players will now call out to teammates while in the down state.

Menu

  • Playlists have been updated:
    • Find Match (DLC 2) has been added.  This includes the new maps from the Reclaimed Territories map pack (available now), and the original maps, although the DLC maps will appear much more frequently.
    • Find Match (No Parties) is now at the top of the list for each gametype
    • Find Match renamed to Find Match (Parties Allowed)
    • Removed upcoming map image that would appear above the loadout selections during loading to make room for additional loadouts.
    • When the user clicks on a DLC item, they are now taken directly to the item to download instead of the store listing.

Survival Skills

  • Sharp Ears now has a third level and has had all levels significantly buffed.

Maps

  • Downtown has had its render settings altered to make players appear brighter on the level and to make the overall lighting on the level a bit brighter.
  • The depth of field on High School was tweaked to match the other multiplayer maps.

Supply Boxes

  • Supply boxes now only spawn comeback weapons (purchase weapon or machete) when a player is the "Last One Standing". In situations where a player would have received a comeback weapon, that a player now receives a 2x4 (if they don’t already have one).
  • Increased threshold for comeback parts to spawn so they won't spawn when a team is losing by a small margin.

New Maps [discuss]

  • Water Tower
    • Set in Lincoln, PA, the Water Tower map features two primary chokepoints for some deadly face-to-face confrontations. It's mainly an outdoor map with a few indoor areas and some very unique lighting. It might seem open but it's really a tight map that's perfect for close quarters melee.
  • Capitol
    • Set in Boston, the Capitol Map features indoor and outdoor gameplay. It encourages the intelligent use of flanking.
  • Coal Mine
    • Set in Colorado, Coal Mine is a winter map that is spotted with abandoned buildings. It's a spacious map that has long lines of sight and a bridge that's a perfect perch for snipers. The dynamic snowstorm obscures the view so be on your toes.
  • Wharf
    • Set in the rusted-out docks where Joel encountered Robert, the Wharf map features close quarters gameplay, two snipers nests, and a giant boat. It's full of good opportunities for climbing, flanking and stealth.

The Last of Us: New DLC and Season Pass End

The Last of Us: New DLC and Season Pass End

The final DLC drop for The Last of Us Season Pass is coming. Here are the full details and more information about new items for Factions Mode and Single Player.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Wednesday April 16 2014

The Last of Us: New DLC and Season Pass End

We’re pleased to announce the third and final drop in The Last of Us season pass. Here’s a rundown of what’s in the new DLC drop.

New trophies and a mix of single player and multiplayer content await you in this DLC drop. Grounded Mode will be the hardest challenge you’ll ever face as you try to complete the single player campaign of The Last of Us. The AI is relentless, smart, and brutal and survival will be near impossible. “Completed Grounded Mode” might be one of the most difficult trophies you’ll ever earn. If you’re not a season pass holder Grounded Mode will cost $4.99 standalone.

The Reclaimed Territories Map Pack features four news maps: Wharf, Capitol, Coal Mine, and Water Tower. Each map has a mix of trophies attached and is set in location that will be familiar yet unfamiliar to players of the single player campaign. Intelligent use of climbing, stealth, flanking, and all your clan survival techniques will be essential to master these maps. It is available for $9.99 for non-season pass holders.

Wharf

Set in the rusted-out docks where Joel encountered Robert, the Wharf map features close quarters gameplay, two snipers nests, and a giant boat. It's full of good opportunities for climbing, flanking and stealth.

Capitol

Set in Boston, the Capitol Map features indoor and outdoor gameplay. It encourages the intelligent use of flanking.

Coal Mine

Set in Colorado, Coal Mine is a winter map that is spotted with abandoned buildings. It's a spacious map that has long lines of sight and a bridge that's a perfect perch for snipers. The dynamic snowstorm obscures the view so be on your toes.

Water Tower

Set in Lincoln, PA, the Water Tower map features two primary chokepoints for some deadly face-to-face confrontations. It's mainly an outdoor map with a few indoor areas and some very unique lighting. It might seem open but it's really a tight map that's perfect for close quarters melee.

New guns and new survival skills are coming as part of the new DLC as well. All new guns and skills are available to try before you buy as part of new pre-set load outs. The Survivalist Weapon Bundle costs $5.99 contains four new weapons: Specter, Double Barrel, Enforcer, and Launcher. These guns have very unique attributes that have been carefully balanced so as to offer new play styles that fit into the existing Factions gameplay.

Survivalist Weapon Bundle

Need more firepower? This is your bundle. The Survivalist Weapon bundle includes the Specter, Double Barrel, Enforcer, and Launcher. PSN purchase unlocks this gun for use in your Custom Loadout.

Specter

A silenced assault rifle that's great if your style is stealth stalker. PSN purchase unlocks this gun for use in your Custom Loadout.  Equip in the Purchasable loadout slot, then use in-game parts to buy it during the match.

Double Barrel

Classic, deadly, double-barrel shotgun. Only 1 loadout point. PSN purchase unlocks this gun for use in your Custom Loadout.  Equip in the Purchasable loadout slot, then use in-game parts to buy it during the match.

Enforcer

Highly accurate pistol but will cost you an extra loadout point.

Launcher

A weapon that fires small explosives, in the vein of a home-made potato gun. PSN purchase unlocks this gun for use in your Custom Loadout.  Equip in the Purchasable loadout slot, then use in-game parts to buy it during the match.

Two Survival Skills Bundles, Situational Survival Skills Bundle and Professional Survival Skills Bundle, are also included if you own the season pass. If you want to purchase these standalone they’ll cost you $3.99 each. These skills are very effective ways to find your new favorite play style.

Situational Survival Skills Bundle

Unlock four survival skills that will help you get the best of any situation. This bundle includes Agility, Awareness, Fortitude, and Scavenger.

Agility

Climb, vault, and move while crouching faster than you could before. At level 3 you are nearly impossible to hear while moving.

Awareness

See enemy nametags before they see yours and enemy nametags remain on screen for several seconds when taking fire.

Fortitude

Downed? Level up this skill and it will help you survive longer as you'll take longer to bleed out, crawl faster, and have more health when downed.  At higher levels you'll start with an extra health pack, and earn extra parts each time you heal.

Scavenger

Automatically pick up ammo and supplies and see increases in drops from enemies with this valuable skill. At level 3 enemies sometimes drop a random crafting ingredient.

Professional Survival Skills Bundle

Unlock four survival skills that will make you even more deadly. This bundle includes Gunslinger, Bomb Expert, Executioner, and Damage Marker.

Gunslinger

Equip this skill to start each spawn with more pistol ammo as you level up the skill.

Bomb Expert

Your bombs will explode more quickly and you'll be immune to the stun of your own smoke bomb as you level up this skill.

Executioner

If your play style is the higher the risk, the greater the reward then this is the skill you want. Earn more parts for shiv kills and special executions, and get extra shiv uses every time you craft a shiv.

Damage Marker

Good at hitting your targets? This is the skill for you as you'll automatically mark any enemies you hit and earn double the parts for making.

Finally everyone, non-season pass holders included, will be getting a new gun - the Full-Auto Rifle - for free. This is a fully automatic, modified burst rifle that is very easy to use. It’s the perfect weapon for people who are new to Factions and experts alike.

While it’s been very cool to tell you about all this fresh content nothing beats showing you. To that end we’ll be live-streaming for the first time ever Thursday, April 24 over on the Naughty Dog Twitch channel. We’ll be showing off some of the new DLC content so tune in at 12noon PST on April 24 to see new DLC in action.

Additionally, we’ll be doing some live-streaming on Twitch of our participation in Operation Supply Drop’s 8-Bit Salute on May 17. Head over to learn more about the event at Team Naughty Dog’s fundraising page today.

If you haven’t purchased a season pass for The Last of Us yet you’re missing out. With our final pack, this new DLC drop, as well as the Abandoned Territories, the Left Behind, and the multiplayer head items drops all included, you’ll be getting savings of over 80% versus purchasing all the content individually. The Art of Naughty Dog: Celebrating 30 Years of Games

The Art of Naughty Dog: Celebrating 30 Years of Games

Naughty Dog is celebrating 30 years of making games this year with various merchandise and events. Read up on our plans so far.

The Art of Naughty Dog: Celebrating 30 Years of Games

Yes, you read the headline right. Back in 1984 Andrew Gavin and Jason Rubin formed a company called JAM (Jason and Andy Magic) Software. Five years later, after finding new publishing support, the game development company with the very 80s name incorporated as Naughty Dog, Inc. Fast forward to 2014, tally up over seventy million games sold globally, and we’re now celebrating thirty years of making awesome games.

One of the hallmarks of Naughty Dog always has been our top-notch artistic quality and talent. We’re paying tribute to that this year as we’re teaming up with Dark Horse Comics to release The Art of Naughty Dog.

The Art of Naughty Dog will be available later this year. It will span the history of Naughty Dog and feature hand-picked and never before released artwork depicting our past, present, and future. Being around for thirty years has bestowed upon us all kinds of incredible art from our amazing fans. Select fan art will be a chapter of the book as well. To mark the occasion properly we’re having a book launch event later in the year. We’ll have more details once the pages and the plans are ready.

We’ll have other celebratory merchandise available and we have some very special events planned over the next few months. We’re currently at PAX East with the rest of our PlayStation Family and there are hints at what’s coming for our anniversary in our activities there. Also, if you didn’t hear the news, it was recently announced that we are participating in Operation Supply Drop’s 8-Bit Salute. We encourage you to check out Team Naughty Dog’s fundraising page today.

This kicks off several anniversary announcements happening over the coming months. Turning thirty is going to be a fun year for us all. Get ready to celebrate with us!

The Last of Us Remastered - Coming to PS4 Summer 2014

Well, it’s no secret that we have been working night and day at the studio to bring The Last of Us to PS4.

We’re calling it The Last of Us Remastered.

Moving our efforts to the PS4 has allowed us to remaster an already phenomenal looking The Last of Us in 1080p with a list of upgrades including higher resolution character models, improved shadows and lighting, and upgraded textures, along with even more improvements. We love setting challenging technical hurdles for us when working on each game – and this is no different. We’ve been working hard on The Last of Us Remastered to release a next-gen evolution worthy of the 200+ Game of the Year awards, not to mention the acclaim and expectations of our fans. We will be revealing more detailed information about the upgrades for the PS4 version in the coming months.

In addition to all the technical updates, we’re also including an exclusive director’s commentary for all in-game cinematics featuring Creative Director and Writer, Neil Druckmann; Voice Actor, Troy Baker, who plays Joel; and BAFTA Award winning Voice Actress, Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie.

We’ve released a ton of additional content since The Last of Us launched in June 2013, including our first ever single player expansion, Left Behind. We’re happy to say that the major content releases will be included with The Last of Us Remastered:

PAX East 2014: PlayStation Worldwide Studios Community Exchange

April truly marks the beginning of the gaming event season in many ways. With spring in full bloom it’s the best time to try something fresh and new. We’re doing just that at PAX East this year. For the first time ever, five of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios community teams have banded together to construct a community focused booth.

Come hang out with your PlayStation family in booth #608 at the Boston Convention Center April 11-13. You can discuss, share, and create PlayStation memories with community team leads from Guerrilla, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Sony Xdev. We have a slew of daily activities planned for all attendees, even those who cannot make the trip to Boston. Join our conversation now and all show long with #PSPax to participate!

While you’re there we’ll be offering up some highly collectible PlayStation memorabilia. This merchandise is rare, coveted, unique to PAX East, and will sell out! Here’s a full rundown on what’s been created exclusively for sale at the PlayStation Worldwide Studios Community Exchange:

PlayStation Family (#PSPax)

To commemorate our first ever community-driven booth we’ve made a PlayStation Family Limited Edition PAX East 2014 T-shirt. These beauties are limited to 500 shirts total and will be sold for $20 so be sure to get one while you can.

Guerrilla

The hardworking people of New Helghan have created two unique items especially for PAX! Both will be available exclusively from the PlayStation World Wide Studios stand (booth #608).

Killzone Shadow Fall Assault Trooper T-shirt ($20 US)
Helghast Assault Troopers form the backbone of the New Helghan army. Show the world that you support the Helghast cause with this stylish Assault Trooper T-shirt. Available in S, M, L and XL.

Killzone Shadow Fall "Toothpick Holder" ($10 US)
This "toothpick holder" is the rightful property of the Helghan people and may not be removed from Helghast territories under penalty of death. A great conversation starter at Vektan parties.

Naughty Dog

PAX Pinny arcade just got way cooler as Ellie from The Last of Us gets her very own Pinny. The Ellie Pinny is available for $15. Also from The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Left Behind put down $20 for The Last of Us: Left Behind Cool Bunny T-shirt or The Last of Us Firefly Symbol T-shirt, both exclusive colors for PAX East and never before available outside of the studio.

Finally, in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics, featuring new cover artwork from Faith Erin Hicks and coloring by Alexandria Neonakis, there will be 200 copies of a short run of 1,000 copies of The Last of Us: American Dreams Limited Edition Graphic Novel available at PAX East.

Be sure to check out the back cover for a special logo foreshadowing a unique event regarding the studio.  Related to that be sure to visit the Naughty Dog team page on Operation Supply Drop’s 8-bit Salute.

Sony Santa Monica

The Gods of Olympus have smiled upon you, PAX East mortals, as two original items, both featuring the God of War™ Ascending design, will be available for purchase. We like to call this “Kratos of the Rising Sun”, and his favorite “toothpick glass.”

If you feel like chilling out (and who wouldn’t) then be sure to pick-up this whimsical, eclectic t-shirt from the world of Hohokum , coming this year from the geniuses at Honeyslug. You can get either of these PAX exclusive t-shirts for just $20 while the “toothpick glass” will cost you $10.

Sony Xdev

Sackboy has come out to spread joy in the form of a cheery phone case for iPhone and Samsung phones and a happy, little mug. You get these items from the booth shop for just $20 and $10 respectively.

We will also be giving away some exclusive Sony Xdev prizes ranging from games made by our top studio to some signed artwork from the team behind Murasaki Baby!

Media Molecule has made a host of Tearaway items that you can get for FREE via giveaways, trade or with purchases at our store.

Yes! That’s an iota Pinny! Come and find one of the WWS community managers to trade or just bargain for one of these. With only 1000 in circulation, they’re going to be pretty rare!

We’ll be giving these Tearaway posters away throughout the weekend, come and see us to find out when.

These iota and atoi phone charms will be FREE with every purchase at the booth, while stocks last, and limited in number each day, so come early to avoid disappointment!

The biggest show exclusive we have to offer comes from recently released inFAMOUS Second Son. Limited to just 77 pieces at PAX East 2014, with only 300 ever made, this will be the first time the inFAMOUS Second Son Collectible Delsin Statue has been available for sale to the public. It’s a work of art and can be yours for $150 dollars. It’ll be out for one day only – Saturday April 12 – so don’t miss out!

There’s so much more to our PlayStation Community Exchange than just awesome collectible goods. Of course it’s not a PlayStation event if there’s not an element of play as well. Be on the lookout for all the fun happenings and cool activities we have planned for our PAX East community booth in an upcoming blog post.

See you in a few days! #PSPax

2014 Naughty Dog GDC Talks and The Last of Us Accolades

2014 Naughty Dog GDC Talks and The Last of Us Accolades

A full rundown of all the GDC talks Naughty Dog will be giving this year and an update on the accolades The Last of Us has received.

By Eric-ND | Twitter @ermonacelli | Friday March 14 2014

2014 Naughty Dog GDC Talks and The Last of Us Accolades

As we did in in 2012, we’ll have a large pack of Dogs giving talks at GDC 2014. We just wrapped up The Last of Us: Left Behind to universal critical acclaim. It currently has a score of 89 on Metacritic making it the highest rated PS3 downloadable content ever. We also recently received five BAFTA awards, including the coveted Best Game in 2014, for our work on The Last of Us.

We’re now heading to GDC to talk about some of the techniques and process that went into making The Last of Us, which has now hit over six million copies sold worldwide, as well as what made Left Behind, our first ever downloadable, single player story chapter, so unique.

The full list of sessions for all Naughty Dog talks, along with dates, times, locations and descriptions, is available below. Visit the GDC Schedule builder if you want to put these sessions in your calendar, export them or print them out.

Elisabetta Silli | Game Designer

Location: Room 303, South Hall

Date: Tuesday, March 18

Time: 3:00pm-4:00pm

It's particularly hard joining a project toward the end, during its most crucial moments. You have a limited time to understand the game, the vision and to help make it better - all at the same time. This talk will focus on Elisabetta's experience of joining Naughty Dog during the last months of development of The Last of Us, her work on the combat tutorial, and how her involvement on it led to her training and understanding of a very different genre than she had previously worked on.

Elisabetta says:

“Joining a new studio, culture, and a new IP is never easy. My talk is about how I crashed onto The Last of Us during the final months of its development and lived to tell the tale”

Keith Guerrette | Lead FX Artist

Location: Room 3016, West Hall

Date: Wednesday, March 19

Time: 5:00pm-5:25pm

The sky is one of the most integral components of an outdoor composition - it dictates the lighting and color palette, it casts the mood and drives the story, and frequently, it can consume a majority of the pixels on-screen. Yet, it's often one of the most overlooked, snubbed components of level creation. And for making it move? Most practices either look terrible, or require vast amounts of time and technology. Within this presentation, Keith will walk the audience through the artistic considerations of creating a compelling, dramatic sky to cast as a backdrop for their artwork. More importantly, he'll introduce the production challenges of skies within The Last of Us, and teach the audience how we were able to use vector fields, flow and some simple math to imply the motion of clouds receding into the horizon on a single matte painting, without losing our fast iteration.

Keith says:

“Because the tone, color palette, and setting were so important to the narrative experience of The Last of Us, we had to treat the skies like they had their own personalities and stories to tell. Come and let me share with you all of the successes, and way more of the failures, from our experience building the skies in The Last of Us.”

Eben Cook | Lead Visual Effects Artist

Location: Room 3016, West Hall

Date: Wednesday, March 19

Time: 5:35pm-6:00pm

In The Last of Us you spill a lot of blood during melee combat and gun fighting. It was important that the effects had a realistically rendered appearance even if the amount and use of blood was stylized. The blood and water in the game needed to have the physical properties of liquid, such as surface tension, reflection and refraction, all represented by a shader on a particle. This session goes in depth to show the tools and shader techniques developed for the blood and water particles in The Last of Us.

Eben says:

“Blood makes me squeamish, but I faced my fears and came up with a clever way to make it happen in The Last of Us. Come see how I did it!”

Anthony Newman | Game Designer

Location: Room 2016, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 10:00am-11:00am

This session is an overview of the design and implementation of the melee system for The Last of Us. The design portion of the talk will discuss solutions to the challenges of creating an effective hybrid between gunplay and melee combat, and how those mechanics emphasized the tone and world of The Last of Us. The implementation portion will delve into the technical details of how we sync animations, our memory management, and efficient scripting practices. The talk will also cover the evolutions made between Uncharted and TLOU, the additional challenges of multiplayer, and an examination of techniques we used to achieve the game's brutal aesthetic.

Anthony says:

“This talk will be a breakdown of the techniques used to make the melee system of The Last of Us, from animation style to game mechanics to scripting techniques. Come learn how to make people punch other people in the face better.”

Jason Gregory | Lead Gameplay Programmer

Location: Room 3003, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 10:00am-11:00am

In our most recent game, The Last of Us, the sound team at Naughty Dog created a powerful dialog system that allows enemy and ally NPCs to converse with each other and the player character in realistic ways. This system takes into account rich contextual information, including individual knowledge, collective knowledge, global game state, and information about the surrounding environment. This system puts a great deal of power directly into the hands of the sound designers, freeing the programmers to focus on AI behaviors. This talk will explore the requirements and problems inherent in any NPC dialog system, and describe the baseline features required of any such system. The talk will then investigate the unique problems Naughty Dog faced in The Last of Us, and describe the systems developed to solve them. It will then conclude with Q&A and a discussion of some ideas for future work.

Jason says:

"Join me and take a tour of the dialog system in The Last of Us. You'll learn what problems we faced, and what solutions we decided to use. My hope is that you'll come away with some good ideas for making 'The Most Awesome Dialog System Ever' in your next project!"

Jonathan Lanier | Programmer

Location: Room 3002, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 10:00am-11:00am

In The Last of Us, immersive audio played a critical role in supporting the gameplay and story. The audio team was faced with difficult challenges: the immersion had to be believable, but subtle. It had to convey tactical information, but important dialogue and effects still had to be audible. Cinematic setups sometimes conflicted with standard audio models. Solutions required compromise and collaboration between sound design and technology. This talk examines how specific problems were solved, such as getting the environment to lead the player to or from tactically important areas, ensuring the audibility of important dialogue, adjusting the mix dynamically based on game state, and dealing with obstruction/occlusion issues. The emphasis is on successful implementation of immersive audio in a modern game using a synergy of sound design and technology, citing specific examples from The Last of Us.

Jonathan says:

“My talk will cover the audio technology used in The Last of Us, and how it was used to enhance the immersion of the game.  See how we solved some difficult environmental audio problems in unique ways.”

Travis McIntosh | Lead Programmer

Location: Room 2006, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 3:05pm-3:30pm

This talk covers the technical and design decisions made to produce the human enemy AI as seen in The Last of Us. It covers the systems that formed the core of the AI decision making, as well as a higher-level look at the behaviors that formed the building blocks of enemy combat and stealth. Navigation, real-time level analysis, combat, search and stealth are all covered in detail, as well as mistakes and future improvements. Finally, the performance characteristics of the AI and various optimizations are discussed in detail. Consider this talk a description, then a postmortem of the human enemy AI.

Travis says

“The talk is a brain dump/postmortem on the enemy AI in the Last of Us. This will include info on how and why we built the enemy npcs and combat, what we screwed up, and what we think we can improve in the future.”

Robh Ruppel  | Art Director

Location: Room 2006, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 3:05pm-3:30pm

This talk is intended to illustrate visual concepts that can add deeper meaning, content and context to the game experience. By exploring and utilizing visual ideas, the game maker can connect more deeply with the audience. Just as good story and good characters are important to an immersive experience, so are more complex visual design ideas such as allegory, alliteration and iconography. Robh will walk thru several examples of these ideas, and illustrate them with specific slides to show how more sophisticated visual design has been part of media for a while, and how we can and should be integrating this into game visuals.

Robh says:

“Just as good story and good characters are important to an immersive experience, so are more complex visual design ideas such as visual metaphor, allegory, alliteration and iconography /symbolism. Being aware of visual design language is just as important as learning about story structure or how the latest GI rendering engines work. Visual design structure needn't only be the province of movies, plays, literature or television.”

Max Dyckhoff | Engineer

Location: Room 2020, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 4:00pm-5:00pm

The character of Ellie in The Last of Us presented a challenge. The game was centered on the player's relationship with her, and we needed to ensure that the systematic presentation of the character was in line with what was presented by the narrative. This session will investigate the successful techniques used to generate a believable "buddy" AI character, including an overview of the mindset with which we developed the character, and a look at the individual systems developed. The talk will also review the shortcomings and discuss why certain decisions were made.

Max says

“Meet the leading lady in The Last of Us, and the process behind her development. Learn from our mistakes in making fun companion AI.”

Vivian Ding | Lead Lighting Artist

Location: Room 2016, West Hall

Date: Thursday, March 20

Time: 5:30pm-6:30pm

From creating the visually believable environments in a post-apocalyptic world to supporting the complex story narrative, lighting plays a huge role in The Last of Us. This talk is designed to give you a deep look into Naughty Dogs lighting creation through the inspirations of our concept art, experiments in the lighting pipeline, and the major technological improvements such as dominant directionality, ambient shadows and flashlight bounce lighting we developed to achieve the desired rendering results. The session will provide you the essential processes and differences between our in-game lighting and cinematic lighting.

Vivian says:
“You will leave the session with in-depth understanding about Naughty Dog’s in-game and cinematic lighting technology in The Last of Us. We will show what we learned to approach art and tech together for making a game with virtually next-gen visual quality on a current-gen console.”
